What are some ways to kill a Danbury skunk in the yard?
Danbury skunks are scavengers that are found predominantly in North America. They are well-known for the foul-smelling spray that they release when they feel threatened. This makes it difficult to capture them without getting sprayed.
How to catch a skunk
Catching a Connecticut skunk is easy enough if you have the right trap and bait. A variety of traps can be used. The traps range from lethal to humane. As long as you bait the trap correctly, you should be able to catch the pest. There are a variety of ways to bait a skunk trap. These include tinned fish (like sardines), fresh insect larvae and even bacon. Skunks are nocturnal so they will be easier to catch at night.
Are they dangerous?
Healthy Danbury skunks generally do not bite people. They are, however, carriers of rabies. If you are bitten by a skunk, the chances are that it is infected. Make sure to get to a doctor so that a shot can be administered. It is also important that the infected skunk is removed before it can infect other people or animals.
How to kill a skunk
1. Poison. It is not a good idea to poison Danbury skunks. They may not die at once and will wander off and die elsewhere. This means that other scavengers can feast on the poisoned body. Other animals may also come into contact with the poison that you have put out.
2. Traps. Traps are usually an inhumane way to get rid of pests. They often don’t kill the skunk and will only leave it to suffer.
3. Shoot it. This method is usually left to people in more rural areas. It is important that you have a permit to kill a wild animal. Make sure that you do not shoot another animal instead. Skunks are similar in size to cats, and the latter is often killed by accident.
4. Gassing. Some states permit the use of lethal gas inside Connecticut skunk burrows. Sodium nitrate gas cartridges are thrown into the burrows. The hole is then closed off the keep the gas from escaping. Be very careful not to use this close to your home or pets.
5. Carbon monoxide poisoning. Many people trap skunks in cages and then put a bag around the cage. They attach a hosepipe to the exhaust pipe of their car and put the other end in the bag. This will cause the skunk to asphyxiate.
